The Sports Lover’s Guide for Visiting Miami
Fall is the season of sport here in Miami. Miami’s professional sports games have an electric atmosphere that’s enjoyable whether you’re a fan or not. Here’s what you need to know about the city’s most beloved teams, how to get to a game, and where to score tickets.
The two-time World Series champions are the only team in the major North American professional sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) to have never lost a playoff round. Catch Starlin Castro, Martin Prado, and Curtis Granderson in action at Marlins Park, located on the former Miami Orange Bowl site in Little Havana. Completed in 2012, the stadium (complete with a retractable roof!) was certified as the greenest MLB park. The regular season runs approximately from late March to early October. Grab tickets here. Visit Marlins Park, 6.4 miles from Celino Hotel.
Under the direction of Head Coach, Erik Spoelstra, the Miami Heat won back-to-back championships with the “Big Three” (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh) in 2012 and 2013. Check out the new wave of NBA all-stars Kelly Olynyk and Jimmy Butler at the American Airlines Arena in Downtown, along Biscayne Bay. Basketball season kicks off in mid-October and ends with the NBA Finals in June. Grab tickets here. Visit American Airlines Arena, 4.6 miles from Celino Hotel.
The NFL team is Florida’s oldest professional sports team and plays at the historic Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Hosting the Orange Bowl, Miami Hurricanes, Miami Marlins (until 2011), the Miami Open, and two World Series, Hard Rock Stadium will soon host its 6th Super Bowl in 2020. Brian Flores takes over the head coaching position this year for the Miami Dolphins as Ryan Fitzpatrick and Kenyan Drake work towards a 3rd Miami Dolphins Super Bowl championship. The regular season begins in early September and ends in January. Grab tickets here. Visit Hard Rock Stadium, 18.1 miles from Celino Hotel.
Hard Rock Stadium also hosts the Miami Hurricanes football team during their regular season. The University of Miami football team has won five AP national championships and are among the most decorated football programs in NCAA history, holding a number of NFL Draft records, two Hurricanes have won the Heisman Trophy, and nine have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. College football season runs from late August through early December. Grab tickets here. Visit Hard Rock Stadium, 18.1 miles from Celino Hotel.
The southernmost team in the NHL plays at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. Although the Panthers have yet to make it to the Stanley Cup, the team has hosted some of hockey’s greatest players of all time. Scott Mellanby, Olli Jokinen (who holds the record for most points and goals for the Panthers) and Hall of Famer John Vanbiesbrouck have all brought their talents to Magic City. Grab tickets here. Visit BB&T Center, 38.5 miles from Celino Hotel.
Inter Miami CF
Major League Soccer’s anticipated Inter Miami CF professional soccer expansion team is due to begin play in 2020. Although David Beckham’s team is setting up temporary residence in Fort Lauderdale, Inter Miami CF’s permanent home at Miami Freedom Park near the airport is slated to open in 2022.
